The Aluminium Tariffs Achieve Trump’s Goals

Stephen Moore writes that “Trump’s Tariffs on Aluminum Kill U.S. Factory Jobs” (op-ed, Sept. 18), as well as Novelis’s ability to build a new mill in Bay Minette, Ala. Yet in response, a company spokesman said that this isn’t true: “We are 100% committed to bringing this plant online . . . and are currently studying the potential for adding a Phase Two investment at the site.”

Like others in the industry, Novelis passes the cost of tariffs on primary aluminum to customers via standard market-pricing mechanisms. The real tariff pressure the company faces is on aluminum-sheet imports from South Korea, which it will rely on temporarily until its new U.S. facility is complete.
